Pickup from your Marrakech riad or hotel after breakfast. Head south over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass — panoramic High Atlas views the whole way — stopping at the ruined Kasbah Glaoui at Telouet, once the seat of the powerful Berber Glaoui family. Lunch at a scenic spot.
Continue through Ouarzazate (Morocco's "Hollywood"), on to Skoura's palm oasis, past the fragrant Valley of Roses — home of Morocco's rose-water industry — and arrive in the red-rock Dades Gorges late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at a local kasbah-style hotel, dinner under the stars.
After breakfast, drive to the dramatic Todgha Gorges near Tinghir — 300-metre red cliffs looming above a narrow river. Walk the base, lunch at a restaurant tucked under the walls, then continue east through pre-Saharan villages to Erfoud, famous for its black fossil marble.
Arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — Morocco's biggest — and check in at a desert inn. Freshen up, then mount your camel for an unforgettable trek deep into the dunes to a Berber tent camp. Dinner prepared over an open fire, music around the fire, sleep under a Milky Way of stars.
Sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, breakfast and hot shower back at the desert inn. Depart along the old caravan routes, cutting west through Nkob, then following the longest river valley in Morocco — the Draa — with its endless palm plantations and mud-brick villages.
Stop for lunch and to explore Agdz, a photogenic desert town, before rolling into Ouarzazate late afternoon. Overnight at a hotel of your choice.
Visit the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photogenic earthen ksars in Morocco. It's been the backdrop for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy and Game of Thrones. Walk the labyrinth of clay-brick alleys before lunch.
