Why everyone falls for Essaouira
Essaouira, Morocco is what happens when a fortified 18th-century port town decides never to hurry again. Built by Sultan Mohammed III and known for centuries as Mogador, its walled medina — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is laid out in rare straight lines behind massive sea ramparts, whitewashed and blue-shuttered, filled with woodworkers, galleries and cafés.
Its nickname is the Wind City of Africa: the Atlantic alizés keep it cool all summer and make its huge beach one of the world's favourite kitesurfing and windsurfing spots. The same wind fills the working port each morning, when the blue boats come in and the day's catch is grilled a few metres from where it landed.
Jimi Hendrix passed through, Orson Welles filmed Othello here, Game of Thrones shot Astapor on the ramparts — but Essaouira never turned into a theme park. It remains a real town with real fishermen, real musicians and the most relaxed café culture in Morocco.

Walk the Skala de la Ville
The sea bastion lined with 18th-century bronze cannons, waves exploding on the rocks below and Mogador island on the horizon — the town's defining view, best an hour before sunset.
Watch the port come alive
Mid-morning, the blue boats unload sardines, rays and eels amid a cloud of very opinionated seagulls. Pick your fish and have it grilled on the spot at the stalls between port and square.
Get lost (gently) in the medina
Unlike Marrakech, Essaouira's straight streets make wandering easy. Look for thuya-wood marquetry — the town's signature craft — plus argan oil, art galleries and raffia shoes.
Ride the wind — or just the beach
Kitesurf and windsurf schools line the bay (lessons for total beginners), and the wide sands are made for long walks, beach football and camel or horse rides toward the dunes of Diabat.
Follow the Gnaoua music
Essaouira is the spiritual home of Gnaoua — hypnotic bass, iron castanets and call-and-response songs. It drifts from café doors year-round and takes over the whole town during the June festival.
Step into Bayt Dakira
The beautifully restored Simon Attias Synagogue and "House of Memory" tells the story of the town where Jews once made up nearly half the population — one of Morocco's most moving small museums.
Meet the tree-climbing goats
The Marrakech road runs through argan country — goats really do climb the trees, and women's cooperatives press the nuts into Morocco's liquid gold. A classic stop on the drive in.

Is Essaouira worth visiting?
Absolutely — it's the perfect counterweight to Marrakech. Where the Red City is intense, Essaouira is salt air, sea walls, blue boats and café time. Most travellers call it their most relaxing stop in Morocco.
How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?
About 190 km — a comfortable 2.5 to 3 hour drive west on a good road, passing argan groves where goats famously climb the trees. On our private tours the drive includes an argan-oil cooperative stop.
Is a day trip from Marrakech enough?
A day trip works — around 5–6 hours in town — and it's a popular add-on to our Marrakech-based tours. But Essaouira is at its best in the evening, when the day-trippers leave and the light turns gold on the ramparts. If your itinerary allows, stay one night.
Why is Essaouira so windy — and can you swim?
The alizés trade winds hit hardest in spring and summer — which is why Essaouira is a world-class kitesurfing and windsurfing spot, and why it stays cool when Marrakech bakes. You can swim; the water is brisk, and mornings and the sheltered end of the bay are calmest.
