14 Day Morocco Tour: Best Two Week Grand Itinerary

Morning in the capital: the 12th-century Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the blue-and-white lanes of the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river. Then wind up into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen, arriving as the evening light turns the town lavender-blue. First of two nights.

No driving today. Photograph the famous blue lanes before the day-trippers arrive — this is why we sleep here twice — then the kasbah gardens, the Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the weavers' souks. In the late afternoon, the short walk to the Spanish Mosque for the sunset panorama over the blue city. Second night in Chefchaouen.

South through the Rif to the Roman ruins of Volubilis (UNESCO) — mosaic floors still in place after 2,000 years, storks nesting on the columns. Lunch near Moulay Idriss, then Meknes and the monumental Bab Mansour gate. Arrive in Fes by evening. First of two nights in the medina.

A full day inside Fes el-Bali (UNESCO) with a local specialist guide: Al-Qarawiyyin — founded in 859 AD, the world's oldest continuously operating university — the carved-cedar Bou Inania Madrasa, the technicolour Chouara tanneries, and the coppersmith and weaver quarters. Second night in Fes.

The big landscape day: alpine Ifrane, the cedar forests (watch for Barbary macaques), the Tizi n'Talghomt pass and the palm-packed Ziz Valley down to the desert's edge. Honest note: it's the longest drive of the trip (~7 hours with stops) — and it ends with the best arrival in travel: a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, dinner and drums at your desert camp, and a sky you'll never forget. First of two Sahara nights.

The day that separates this tour from every rushed version: no driving anywhere. Sunrise from the dunes, slow breakfast, then choose your Sahara — a 4×4 circuit of Erg Chebbi to nomad camps and the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia, sandboarding, or nothing but tea and silence. Sunset from the high dunes, second night under the stars.

Sunrise from the dunes, then leave the sand behind for the stone: walk the floor of the Todra Gorge beneath 300-metre walls, follow the "road of a thousand kasbahs" through the Dades Valley and pass the Valley of the Roses at Kelaat M'Gouna.

Honest note: with the stops this is a long day (~6–7 hours' driving) — but pushing to Ouarzazate tonight is what buys you a whole extra day in Marrakech later. Pool, dinner and a well-earned night at a riad in Ouarzazate.

A short hop to the Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO) — early enough to climb to the granary before the day-trip crowds arrive. Then the old caravan road over the Tizi n'Tichka (2,260 m) with a stop at the half-forgotten Telouet Kasbah and its hidden painted salons.

Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon — first of three nights in the Red City. Evening free.

A full guided day in the Red City: the Koutoubia, the beautifully restored Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Bahia Palace, and the souk labyrinth — carpets, lanterns, spices, argan. As the light fades, mint tea on a rooftop over Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls and storytellers take over. Second night in Marrakech.

The day the compressed itineraries can't give you. Start slow with a traditional hammam — steam, black soap, argan-oil massage — then the morning is yours: the Majorelle or Le Jardin Secret gardens, one more round of the souks, or nothing at all.

In the late afternoon, a short drive to the Agafay desert — a moonscape of stone hills with the High Atlas floating behind — for sunset with mint tea, with optional camel or quad rides and a desert-camp dinner under the stars. Third night in Marrakech.

West to the coast, stopping at an argan-oil cooperative (tree-climbing goats included). Essaouira is the perfect decompression chamber after two weeks of colour and noise: sea air, whitewashed ramparts, blue fishing boats, gnawa music drifting from café doors. Pick your lunch straight off the boats. Overnight in a medina riad.

A slow morning — the beach promenade, the Skala ramparts, last souvenirs in the woodcarvers' souk. Early afternoon drive back to Marrakech for your farewell dinner. Overnight in Marrakech.
