Imlil, Morocco: The High Atlas on Marrakech's Doorstep
Ninety minutes from the medina's noise, Imlil is another world — Berber villages stacked on the slopes, walnut groves, rushing streams and North Africa's highest peak filling the sky. Here's our local guide.
Why Imlil is Marrakech's best-kept escape
Imlil sits at 1,740 m in the High Atlas, at the end of a valley road that climbs out of the Marrakech plain and into another climate entirely. It's famous as the trailhead for Mt Toubkal — at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa — but you don't need boots and crampons to love it here.
This is Amazigh (Berber) country: flat-roofed villages like Aroumd stacked above the river, terraced fields of barley, walnut and cherry trees, mules doing the heavy lifting on paths older than any road. Springtime means blossom and meltwater; summer means air that's 10–15°C cooler than Marrakech; winter dusts everything above the village in snow.
For travellers, Imlil is the easiest way to add real mountains to a Morocco itinerary — as a day trip from Marrakech, or an overnight in a mountain gîte where dinner is a tagine that cooked all afternoon and the only sound at night is the river.
The Imlil valley you'll remember
The best things to do in Imlil
Walk the valley loop to Aroumd
An easy 1–2 hour stroll between villages, walnut groves and barley terraces, with the Toubkal massif filling the horizon. Mules pass, kids wave, and the pace of everything drops.
Find the Imlil waterfalls
A short climb above the village, best in spring when the snowmelt is running. The café at the base serves fresh orange juice that tastes like it was invented here.
Mint tea in a Berber home
The real highlight: bread from the communal oven, walnut honey, amlou and tea on a family terrace. We arrange it with families we've known for years.
Let a mule do the work
Kids (and tired adults) can ride the mule trails between villages — the same paths that have carried everything up this valley for centuries.
Stand at the Toubkal trailhead
Even without climbing, walking the first stretch toward Sidi Chamharouch gives you the big-mountain feeling — pilgrims, muleteers and the valley falling away behind you.
Catch the Asni Saturday souk
If your visit lands on a Saturday, the weekly market down the valley at Asni is the real rural Morocco — livestock, vegetables, barbers and blacksmiths, barely a tourist in sight.
Best time & getting there
🗓️ Best time to visit
Spring (March–May) is blossom and meltwater season; autumn is clear and golden. Summer is the classic escape — 10–15°C cooler than Marrakech.
Winter turns the peaks alpine white. Evenings are fresh at altitude in any season — bring a layer.
🚗 Getting there
About 64 km from Marrakech — a scenic 90-minute private drive through the Asni valley, climbing all the way.
Perfect as a day trip; even better with a night in a mountain gîte — dinner by the fire, breakfast with Toubkal out the window.
Add Imlil to your Morocco trip
Imlil isn't on our standard routes — and that's exactly why guests love it. We add it as a private Atlas day trip from Marrakech (drive, valley walk, Berber lunch, back by evening) or an overnight in a mountain gîte — to any of our tours, or as a standalone escape during your Marrakech stay.

Imlil questions, answered
How far is Imlil from Marrakech?
About 64 km — a scenic 90-minute private drive south through the Asni valley, climbing from the plains to 1,740 m. It's the easiest way to stand in real high mountains on a Morocco trip, even as a day visit.
Do I need to be a hiker to enjoy Imlil?
Not at all. The village-to-village paths are gentle strolls between walnut groves, mules do the carrying, and mint tea on a Berber family's terrace is the real highlight. Serious trekkers use Imlil as the Toubkal trailhead — most of our guests come for the valley, the views and the lunch.
Can we visit without climbing Mt Toubkal?
Yes — most visitors do exactly that. A classic Imlil day: drive up from Marrakech, walk the valley loop to Aroumd and the waterfalls, lunch in a Berber home, and be back in Marrakech for dinner.
When is the best time to visit Imlil?
Spring brings blossom and rushing streams; autumn is clear and golden; summer runs 10–15°C cooler than Marrakech; winter is alpine. Bring a warm layer any season — evenings are fresh at altitude.
