Upon arrival at Marrakech airport, your driver-guide meets you and transfers you to your riad — a traditional Moroccan-style private residence tucked inside the medina. After check-in, wander into the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square, where snake charmers, dancers and storytellers set the tone for the journey ahead.
An early breakfast, then depart through the Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the High Atlas — panoramic mountain views the whole way. In Telouet, explore the ruined Kasbah Glaoui, once the residence of the powerful Berber Glaoui family. Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar that has starred in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and countless other films.
After lunch, follow the winding road east to the Dades Gorges, a series of red-rock canyons cut by the Dades River. Overnight at a local hotel with dinner under the stars.
Follow ancient Bedouin trading routes through fortified villages of pre-Saharan mud-brick architecture to Erfoud, famous for its black fossil marble. Continue to the edge of the desert at Merzouga, where the golden Erg Chebbi dunes rise up to 150 metres. Watch the sunset paint the sand red, then dinner at your desert lodge or camp.
A full day in the Sahara. Meet local nomadic families who still live in tents, learn about their way of life, and stop in Khamlia village for a live performance of Gnawa-style music brought north by descendants of Sub-Saharan traders. In the late afternoon, mount your camel for a slow trek deeper into the dunes to a private desert bivouac. Dinner, music around the fire, sleep under the Milky Way.
After sunrise over the dunes, depart for Rissani — a historic market town where the ruling Alawite dynasty was founded. Explore the busy souk, then continue west through Berber villages, palm groves and vast desert plains to Zagora, sitting on the edge of the Sahara. Time to relax at your riad and watch the sun set over the palmerie.
Depart Zagora and follow the Draa Valley back north, stopping at picturesque Agdz for its mud-brick kasbah and endless palm oases. Continue to Ouarzazate, home to Atlas Film Studios and the striking Kasbah Taourirt. Free time in the evening to explore.
Cross the High Atlas back to Marrakech, through picture-postcard villages and rugged mountain scenery. Arrive mid-afternoon; the rest of the day is yours to shop the medina, sink into a hammam, or dine on a rooftop overlooking the Koutoubia minaret.
Drive west to the whitewashed fishing town of Essaouira, past argan-oil cooperatives where you may spot goats climbing the trees. Wander the ramparts overlooking the Atlantic, lunch on fresh grilled fish at the port, and browse the artsy blue-and-white medina at your own pace. Overnight in Essaouira.
Return to Marrakech in the morning. Meet your local city guide for a half-day walking tour: the towering Koutoubia Mosque, the ornate Bahia Palace, and a stroll through the layered souks of the medina — spices, leather, textiles and metalwork. End the day back at Jemaa el-Fnaa as the food stalls light up.
After breakfast, your driver-guide transfers you to Marrakech airport for your onward flight. Safe travels — until you're back for more of this enchanting country.
