9 Day Morocco Imperial Cities Tour: Best Atlas & Sahara Route
A private one-way journey from Casablanca to Marrakech — via imperial Rabat, Meknes, UNESCO Volubilis and Fes, the Cedar Forest of Azrou with its Barbary apes, the Middle Atlas & Ziz Valley, a Sahara camel trek at Merzouga, the Todra Gorges, and UNESCO Ait Ben Haddou. Local driver-guide, private 4WD, on your own dates.
Why this 9 day Morocco imperial cities tour is different
Looking for the perfect 9 day Morocco imperial cities tour that also gets you into the mountains and the Sahara? This is the one. It's the only 9-day route we run that stitches together the four imperial cities, both Atlas mountain ranges, the Cedar Forest of Azrou (with its semi-wild Barbary apes), the Ziz Valley palm oases, and a camel trek and night in the Merzouga dunes.
Start in Casablanca and drive to Rabat, the capital. Cross to imperial Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis (UNESCO) before diving into medieval Fes (UNESCO) for a full day in the medina. Then south through the Cedar Forest of Azrou, the Middle Atlas and the palm-fringed Ziz Valley to the Sahara at Merzouga — camel trek, private desert camp, sunrise over the dunes. Wind back through the Todra Gorges, the Dades Valley, the Rose Town of Skoura, and Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO) to Marrakech.
This 9 day Morocco imperial cities tour is 100% private — your own bilingual driver-guide, your own 4WD, your own dates. Local city guides join in Volubilis, Fes and Marrakech so the history comes alive from someone who lives it.

Your full 9 day itinerary
Meet-and-greet at Casablanca airport by your driver-guide. Quick stop at the Hassan II Mosque — its 690-foot minaret is the world's tallest — then drive up to Rabat, Morocco's political capital. Check in at your hotel, then explore the Chellah Necropolis (a layered tapestry of Roman and Islamic ruins), the 12th-century Kasbah des Oudaias, the Hassan Tower, and the Mausoleum of Mohamed V. Overnight in Rabat.
Depart Rabat for imperial Meknes, the quiet imperial city. Visit its famous gates Bab al-Mansour and Bab al-Khamis, the vast underground granaries of Heri es-Souani, and the elegant Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.
After lunch, step 2,000 years back at Volubilis — the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa (UNESCO), with intricate mosaics still on the floors where they were laid. Continue to Fes late afternoon; check in at your riad in the medina.
Full-day guided walking tour of Fes el Bali, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities in the world (UNESCO). Enter through the iconic blue gate at Bab Boujeloud, walk Talâa Kebira, visit the Chouara Tannery, the 14th-century Al Attarine Madrasa, the historic Al-Qarawiyyin — the world's oldest continuously operating university — and the layered specialised souks. Optional cooking class in the afternoon. Overnight in Fes.
After breakfast, drive south into the Middle Atlas. Stop in the Cedar Forest of Azrou to see semi-wild Barbary macaques — the only monkey species in North Africa, living in family troops among 800-year-old cedars.
Continue over the mountains through the alpine town of Ifrane and down through the palm-fringed Ziz Valley, one of the most photogenic drives in Morocco, to Erfoud — the pre-Saharan gateway. Overnight in Erfoud.
After breakfast, transfer the short drive to Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — Morocco's biggest, rising up to 150 metres. Freshen up at your desert inn, then mount your camel for an unforgettable trek deep into the sand to a private desert camp. Sunset over the dunes, dinner prepared over an open fire, music around the fire, sleep under a Milky Way of stars in a traditional Berber tent.
Sunrise over the Erg Chebbi from your camp, breakfast and hot shower back at the desert inn. Depart west and drive to the dramatic red walls of the Todra Gorges near Tinghir — 300-metre cliffs looming above a narrow river. Walk the base, lunch beneath the walls, then continue through the ochre-red Berber villages of the Dades Valley to Boumalne Dades. Overnight at a local kasbah-style hotel.
Leave Boumalne Dades and drive to the Rose Town of Skoura, where you'll visit the beautifully-restored Kasbah Amridil. Continue to Ouarzazate — the "Hollywood of Africa" — and the famous Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO), backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia.
Cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass with panoramic mountain views the whole way. Arrive in Marrakech late afternoon and check in at your riad.
Meet your local Marrakech guide for a half-day walking tour of the Red City. See the towering Koutoubia Mosque minaret, the ornate Bahia Palace, and the layered souks of the medina — spices, leather, textiles, brass and lanterns. End at Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls light up. Free afternoon to hammam, shop, or dine on a rooftop.
After breakfast, transfer to Marrakech airport for your onward flight. End of tour — from imperial cities to cedar forests, from Sahara dunes to Atlas peaks, and every layer of Morocco in between.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a private tour or a group tour?
100% private. Every departure is just for you and your group — your bilingual driver-guide, your 4WD, your pace. No strangers, no fixed dates. You pick the days you want to travel.
How much does this 9 day Morocco imperial cities tour cost?
Prices start from about $1,190 per person, based on 4 travellers sharing premium accommodation in low season. Solo, couple, family and full 5-star pricing quoted on request within 24 hours.
What makes this different from your other 9 day Morocco tours?
This is the only 9-day route that combines the imperial cities with the Middle Atlas Cedar Forest (Barbary apes), the Ziz Valley, a Sahara camel trek at Merzouga, and both the Middle and High Atlas mountain crossings. Our other 9 day tours focus on either the Atlantic coast (Ouzoud loop) or the north (Chefchaouen from Tangier).
Can we see Barbary apes in the Cedar Forest?
Yes — day 4 stops at the Cedar Forest of Azrou in the Middle Atlas where you can see semi-wild Barbary macaques (the only monkey species in North Africa). Please don't feed them — they are protected.
Is the Sahara desert camp safe and comfortable?
Yes. Our camps have real beds, private tents, hot showers on the standard tier, and luxury upgrades available. All camps are staffed overnight and reachable by 4WD.
When is the best time to travel?
March–May and September–November are ideal — warm days, cool nights, comfortable in cities, mountains and the Sahara. Winter (Dec–Feb) is dramatic and quieter but cold at night in Merzouga and the Middle Atlas. Summer (Jun–Aug) is intense in the desert — we plan around it.
Can we customise the 9 day itinerary?
Absolutely. This route is a starting point — add a night in the desert, swap Meknes for Chefchaouen, upgrade to boutique riads, add a cooking class in Fes, or extend to 10 days with the coast. Just tell us what you'd love.
How do we book — and how much is the deposit?
Message us on WhatsApp or fill the quick form on this page. We reply within 24 hours with your full itinerary and price. Once you're happy, a 30% deposit secures your dates. The balance is paid on arrival in cash or card.
